For three centuries, millions of Africans were forcibly removed from their homelands to work as slaves in Colonial America. Brazil received the largest share of them — around five million individuals. The immense African contribution that followed extended far beyond the material world, deeply influencing Brazil’s art, language, spirituality, family structures, and way of life.
