This book accompanies the first solo exhibition in a São Paulo museum by Luiz Zerbini (São Paulo, 1959), one of the main names in Latin American contemporary art. The exhibition, held at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand, includes five large-scale paintings (four of them produced especially for the occasion), in which the artist revisits critically the genre of historical painting about events in Brazilian history, such as the first mass in the country, celebrated in 1500 by the Portuguese invaders, the Canudos War in 1896–1897, and the Haximu massacre in 1993. The catalog also reproduces images of 51 monotypes from the Macunaíma series, which refers to Mário de Andrade’s book published in 1928, a landmark in Brazilian Modernist literature.
