Mário de Andrade: Two Lives accompanies the exhibition held at Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP) dedicated to the Brazilian author, photographer, and art collector Mário de Andrade (1893–1945). From never-seen-before modernist portraits and sculptures to amateur photographs taken by him on his ethnographic trips to Northern and Northeastern Brazil, the exhibition is the first dedicated to analyzing Mário’s art collection and photographs through a queer gaze, as his sexual orientation still provokes debates in Brazil. Richly illustrated, this catalog envisions an image of Mário that goes beyond the well-renowned writer of novels, short stories, and poems, with unpublished and groundbreaking essays that serve as a base for specialists and the broader audience that seek a deeper understanding of the queer aspects of Mário de Andrade’s body of work and life. This volume includes texts by Regina Teixeira de Barros, curator of the exhibition, Daniela Rodrigues, Assistant Curator, Carolina Casarin, Ivo Mesquita, Jorge Vergara, and Nathaniel Wolfson.
